Whiplash injury, also called neck sprain or neck strain, is a soft tissue injury to the neck. It is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck, usually because of sudden extension and flexion. The disorder commonly occurs as the result of an automobile accident and may include injury to intervertebral joints, discs, and ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots. Whiplash injuries are quite common, and rarely the fault of the victim. Most whiplash injuries are minor and quite often heal within a few weeks with the proper care. Unfortunately, a small number of patients - about 20 to 30% of whiplash injury cases - become chronic and lead to long-term discomfort.
