Cycle
Courier Killed by a Left Turning
Lorry
November 2004
Sebastian Lukomski, working for Anderson Young as a cycle courier, was killed
when he was caught under the wheels of
a lorry just before 9am on Monday 23rd
February 2005. He sustained serious head and chest
injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene
of the accident.
The inquest held at the City of London Coroners Court on the 24th November has
returned a verdict of ‘accidental death´.
The Scania tipper lorry was turning left towards a busy T-junction
with Southwark Bridge. The driver of the HGV
had pleaded guilty to "driving without due care and attention"
at the City of London Magistrates Court on 22nd November.
The
accident highlights the danger that arises when left
turning vehicles are in close proximity to vulnerable
road users such as cyclists and
motorcyclists. It is all just too
familiar - many motorists fail to pay full attention to the traffic on the
nearside of his or her vehicle - which in a busy city
like London, is bound to include
cyclists and motorcyclists.
