Boy injured in rollerblading accident awarded £650,000

2005
Edward Goater, now 21, suffered serious head injuries in November 1996 when,
at the aged of 12, he was hit by a car on the A33 near Basingstoke whilst crossing the road on rollerblades with a group of friends. He was taken to hospital in Oxford where he almost died from severe complications.
The
Court was told that although Goater has recovered fairly well physically from his accident he has since developed epilepsy,
has memory problems and is vulnerable as a result of his head injury. He will need a degree of care and assistance for the rest of his life.
He was unable to continue with his normal
schooling, and although he thrived at special school he was unsuccessful at college and has been unable to hold down a long term job since.
His twin brother has gone on to develop a
successful career in management, and
it was argued that Goater will always be held back by what has
happened to him because of the
accident.
Reading High Court
awarded Goater £650,000 after his family accepted 60% liability for the
tragic accident.
