Brain damaged woman awarded £800,000

Brenda Jones, from Werrington, North Staffordshire who suffered brain damage as result of a routine hysterectomy operation 30 years ago has been awarded £800,000 compensation. The hysterectomy was carried out at North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary in Stoke-on-Trent in 1974.  Problems with the anaesthetic led to a heart attack which cut off the blood supply to her brain.

Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority expressed its regret and offered its "sincere apologies" to Mrs Jones and her family.  Mr and Mrs Jones have 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Since the accident, Mrs Jones has been unable  to recognise friends and family. She requires constant care.
