Injury Claims involving the Police
26 Jun 2007
Are the Police involved in far too many traffic
accidents?
Could the driving and riding standards of the Police be raised?
A recently released report showed that the UK's largest police force, the Metropolitan Police (The Met) has paid out more than £13 million in compensation for traffic accidents involving its officers in the last five years.
This involves both car and motorcycle
accidents, and some senior politicians are asking whether the levels of compensation paid
out by the Metropolitan Police were a "case of continuous incompetence".
Figures obtained from the London Mayor's Office showed that there were 6,525
accident claims against the force in the last five years. However, there are some good news - the amount paid out has fallen from £3.4 million in 2002 to just under £2 million last year. Over the same five year period, the Met recovered £1.7 million in cases when third parties were at fault in traffic collisions, although this did not include personal injury payouts.
Figures obtained also showed about 26,501 work days for police officers were lost over the five year period due to injury suffered in
road traffic accidents while on duty.
